Stop Tracking Vanity Metrics—Here's What Actually Matters

We're drowning in data but starving for insight. Marketing dashboards overflow with numbers that make us feel productive but don't move the needle on what matters: revenue, retention, and real growth.
The Vanity Trap
Vanity metrics are seductive because they're easy to measure and often trend upward. But they're dangerous because they create the illusion of progress while masking fundamental problems.
Common vanity metrics: - Social media followers - Email list size - Page views - App downloads
Metrics That Actually Matter
Focus on metrics that directly correlate with business outcomes:
- **Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)**: What it actually costs to acquire a customer
- **Lifetime Value (LTV)**: The total revenue a customer generates
- **Conversion Rate**: The percentage who take your desired action
- **Retention Rate**: How many customers stay over time
- **Net Revenue Retention**: Growth from existing customers
Making the Shift
Stop celebrating vanity metrics. Start asking the hard questions: Are we profitable? Are customers staying? Is our marketing actually working? The answers might be uncomfortable, but they're necessary.
